EGYPT: Mufti forbids circumcision
CAIRO: The state-appointed Grand Mufti of Egypt has decreed that female circumcision is forbidden by Islam after an 11-year-old girl died while undergoing the procedure at a private medical clinic.
While circumcision remains widespread, Sunday's statement was the strongest yet by the Mufti, Ali Gomaa, who is the Government's official arbiter of Islamic law.
The victim, Budour Ahmed Shaker, died on Thursday while the procedure was being performed under anaesthetic, security sources said. Egypt's doctors' syndicate has launched an investigation into the death, and the girl's father has filed a lawsuit against the doctor for negligence.
Circumcision is performed on Muslim and Christian girls in Egypt and Sudan, but is extremely rare in the rest of the Arab world.SOURCE: Brisbane TimesDate: June 26, 2007URL: View Source
