Kenya/USA: FBI Called to Probe Killing of Citizens in U.S.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been called in to help investigate the killing of a Kenyan woman and her two children in the United States of America.

A spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department in the State of Georgia, Sergeant Dana Pierce, announced the FBI involvement even as police downplayed fear of female circumcision as a motive for the killing.

The FBI "can reach internationally" in the search for the killers, he explained.

The sizable Kenyan community in the Atlanta area has been cooperating with the investigators, Sergeant Pierce added.

US police and FBI agents investigating the murders of three Kenyans in the US say they are now less inclined to view the victims' opposition to the female genital cut as a possible motive in the case.

Triple homicide

Sergeant Pierce said that drug dealing and gang activity had not been ruled out as factors in the August 1 triple homicide.

Jane Kuria, a 49-year-old nursing assistant, was found beaten to death in her suburban Atlanta home along with her two daughters - Isabela, 19, and Annabelle, 16. Ms Kuria's son, 7-year-old Jeremy, was seriously injured as was Peter Thiande, a 10-year-old cousin.

The two boys remained in hospital in Georgia. Police have questioned Thiande but could not say whether he provided leads in the case.

Ms Kuria had sought asylum in the US out of fear that her daughters would be forced to undergo female circumcision if they returned to Kenya, according to Charles Kuck, an immigration attorney representing the family.

Mr Kuck declined in an interview with the Nation.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the three relatives arrived in Nairobi at around 7.15pm on Tuesday and were received by scores of relatives and friends.

A number of women collapsed on seeing the bodies. Prayers were held and then the bodies were taken to Lee Funeral Home. They will be buried on Friday in Kiambu.
